What is a Student-led conference (SLC)?

Every year from village school to G10, Chadwick International School holds student-led conferences (SLC) after the end of the first semester to allow parents to gain an understanding of students’ academic and extracurricular performance throughout the year.

During this process, upper school students create slides based on their Individual Yearbook (IYB) that they work on through the semester to elaborate their overview of the year and demonstrate their journey, mentioning their goals and takeaways.

2022-23 Upper School SLC at CI

On the 14th of April, 2023, upper school students were provided an opportunity to meet their advisors and parents for 20 minutes to convey the learning process throughout the 2022-23 academic year at Chadwick International school. The primary purpose of the conference was to encourage students to take ownership in their education and growth by reflecting on their academic journey. They were able to discuss their progress on the goals that they have set in the past and illustrate their progress. Students deliberated their personal SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals, skills-related goals and the efforts they put to achieve them,  articulating their strengths and areas of improvement in regards to the Approaches to Learning (ATL) Skills. They were able to ease their academic stress by discussing their hardships with their advisor, while were able to actively convey their academic progress to their parents.

Students gained responsibility and self-awareness through this experience, and experiencing both the support of their parents and teachers. Students answered that they have improved their identity as a reflective communicator through their experience with the conference. They explored their strengths and flaws to seek development and communicate their concerns to their parents and advisors to seek support.

Moreover, another key take away of this year’s student-led conference was the strengthened partnership between students, parents, and teachers through their conversations about the domestic and educational support a student can get to improve further. Students said that they were relieved and felt supported in this opportunity.
