What do students get out of Outdoor “Education”?
Outdoor education is an essential element of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, regarded as a crucial component of a comprehensive education and creating enduring memories for many Chadwick International students. Despite providing an apparent “escape” from academic stress and one’s social life, outdoor education has faced criticism for its strict regulations and time dedication.
Regardless of any temporary physical limitations or unforeseen circumstances, Chadwick International mandates that every student partakes in outdoor expeditions that usually last between 1 to 4 weeks. If a student is unable to attend, the school obliges them to document their participation in outdoor activities through personal trips to the wilderness. Students have questioned the event’s effectiveness due to the effort and investment of time, particularly in light of the demanding schedule that high school students generally face.
“It’s less likely that a student will utilize skills such learned in nature usefully in any cause.” Kim, a sophomore has pointed out. “There are other convenient ways of bonding and interacting with each other that take up less time.” Kwon (9), also called into the deficiencies of OE. “I believe that Covid-19 has also impacted the participation of OE for numerous students. I hope the school provides a solution for students with physical hardships that is manageable. It’s hard to take time out of the school year to go on an outdoor trip that requires weeks to finish.”
Despite their frustrations, students acknowledge that the time-consuming activity is difficult to ameliorate. Lee, a freshman, stated that “Despite that OE is time-consuming, it also has its benefits, something that most people will never get to experience in their lifetime.” Another freshman, Park notes that “Outdoor education dates tend to be during busy weeks, giving students a break from restless schedules and summatives.”
A student’s development is not limited to their academic background, yet includes a meaningful lesson obtained through hardships and memorable experiences. While the consequences of the loss of time may be a severe impact on high school students, it is important to say that such risk-taking confrontations are what bring a holistic approach to learning. Accordingly, Chadwick International must take recognition of students’ opinions on Outdoor education and conduct a feasible solution that establishes safer learning.
